Wokha, June 24 (MExN): A two-day specialised skill training programme on post-harvest management and processing of fish commenced at Sanis, Wokha on June 23. The training is organised by the District Administration of Wokha, in collaboration with the Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Kohima and will culminate on June 24.
According to a DIPR report, the training aims to empower unemployed youth in the district and strengthen the Fish-One District One Product (ODOP) of Wokha district, while enhancing the capacity of beneficiaries under the PM Formalization of Micro Food Processing Enterprises (PMFME Scheme).
Organised under the initiatives of Beti Bachao Beti Padhao and District Administration’s concerted effort to promote skill development and entrepreneurship in the fisheries sector with a focus on post-harvest management, the programme seeks to equip participants with essential skills and knowledge in post-harvest management and processing techniques specific to the fish industry.
The two-day programme will cover various aspects of post-harvest management, including proper handling, storage, packaging, value addition, and quality control of fish products. Participants will benefit from expert guidance and practical demonstrations by experienced trainers and resource persons from the Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources. The training aligns with the FISH-One District One Product (ODOP) of Wokha district, which focuses on developing and promoting specific fisheries products unique to the district. By imparting specialized skills in post-harvest management and processing, the programme aims to enhance the market value and competitiveness of Wokha’s fish products.
The initiative is also in line with the PMFME Scheme, which aims to strengthen the capacities of micro-level food processing units. By empowering beneficiaries under this scheme, the training programme seeks to enhance their entrepreneurial capabilities and promote sustainable growth in the food processing sector.
District Fishery Officer (DFO), Peren, C Dory Yanthan, highlighted the significance of this training programme for the district. She stated, “The Post-Harvest Management & Processing of Fish training program is a step towards strengthening the fish industry in our district. By enhancing the skills and knowledge of our youth in this sector, we aim to promote entrepreneurship, create employment opportunities, and contribute to the overall development of Wokha.”
MGNF & In-charge of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship in Wokha, Anuranjan Singh expressed gratitude to the Department of Fisheries & Aquatic Resources, Kohima; DFO Peren, C Dory Yanthan; Vizunu Noswe from AFI and others for their collaboration and support in organising the training. He also extended appreciation to all the participants for their engagement and commitment towards improving their skills and making a positive contribution to the development of the fishery sector in Wokha.
