Call to promote awareness on hypertension, treatment

Dimapur, May 18 (MExN): CHC Medziphema in collaboration with National Programme for Prevention and Control of Cancer, Diabetes, Cardiovascular Diseases and Stroke (NPCDCS), Dimapur organised World Hypertension Day at CHC Medziphema under the theme ‘Measure Your Blood Pressure Accurately, Control It, Live Longer’ on May 17.

During the programme, Dr Valentina Neikha, District Programme Officer for non communicable diseases (NCDs) highlighted on the key facts about hypertension, and a brief overview on the diagnosis, treatment and management of complications due to hypertension, stated a press release. 

She stated that in India is witnessing rapid rise in non communicable diseases such as Diabetes, Cancer, Cardiovascular diseases, stroke, etc surpassing communicable diseases such as TB, vector borne diseases, etc. Deaths due to NCD have increased in an alarming trend over the years. Thus, to prevent and control NCDs, and to promote awareness, NPCDCS was launched by the Government of India in 2010. 

Elaborating on the theme, she stated that with an aim to control and prevent major NCDs, this day was earmarked to promote awareness on hypertension and to seek treatment to control it as uncontrolled hypertension may lead to heart attack, stroke, kidney damage, etc. “When hypertension is regularly checked and controlled, the risk of other chronic illnesses also reduces significantly.” She stated the easiest way to prevent hypertension is “change in our lifestyle such as eating a healthier diet, quitting tobacco and being more active can help lower blood pressure.”

The programme was chaired by Dr Temjensunep, Senior Medical Officer, CHC Medziphema and invocation was said by Nourhe Neikha, Staff Nurse. After the programme, NCD Screening was also organized.
