Aosenden village appeals for necessary action to resume cultivation process

Mokokchung, March 10 (MExN): Once again incident of border-conflict has been reported between Nagaland and Assam states.

Reporting of episodes between Aosenden village (Nagaland) and Nagajanka under Mariani (Assam), the Aosenden Village Council (AVC) chairman and secretary in a press release on Thursday stated that from February 6, the Aosenden villagers under Tsurangkong range of Mokokchung district has begun jhum cultivation activities by clearing the forest “without any doubt as it was known to be our land since ancestral and in the past few decades, our villagers had cultivated twice without any disturbance or issue from Assam.”

However, the AVC alleged that on February 8 “some media personnel, along with Forest Department and Assam police came to the spot and harassed the villagers and took away a car belonging to the Villagers.”

Following which on February 13, the border officials from both states had a talked at Chungtiayimsen village and unanimously agreed to go ahead with the cultivation since it is the only source of livelihood to the villagers. Upon agreement, the villagers resumed their work from March 6, it stated.

“However, on March 8, 2023 around 17:30 hours some suspected miscreants from the Assam border side came to the spot and kindled fire before the completion of jungle clearance and accruing interruption in the series of cultivation,” the council alleged.

“For the record,” the council clarified that “Aosenden Villagers have been cultivating here for the third time (a rotation basis) yet, this time the intervention from the Assam side extends beyond and they keep vigilance by patrolling every day.”

Therefore, it appealed to the concerned authority to look into the matter and “take necessary action at the earliest so that the villagers can start their cultivation process at the right season without delay.”
