Dimapur, March 9 (MExN): Rev Dr Kavito Zhimo from Nagaland has been appointed as the new General Secretary of Bible Society of India (BSI). He took over the office on March 1 from Rev Dr Mani Chacko who served BSI for 12 years (2011-2023).
“This is the history moment for the North East Indian to serve as General Secretary since the formation of the Bible Society of India in 1811,” Rev Dr Yiepetso Wezah, Auxiliary Secretary, BSI Dimapur stated in a press release.
Rev Dr Kavito is an ordained Baptist Minister from Sümi community, born at Khukiye Lukhai village under Zunheboto district. He had his first theological degree (B.Th) from Eastern Theological College, Jorhat, B.D. from Serampore College, M.Th. from Tamil Nadu Theological Seminary, Madurai and Doctor of Theology from United Theological College, Bangalore.
He served as the first pioneering Principal of Trinity Theological College, Dimapur for almost three decades (1992- 2022). He was awarded the Principal Emeritus title by the Sümi Baptist Convention. He also gives honorary leadership to various organizations at regional and national level. Some of his important leadership position includes, President of Council of Baptist Churches in North East India (CBCNEI) from 2012 to 2015, during which the North East Christian University (NECU) a project of CBCNEI bill was passed by the Government of Nagaland Legislative Assembly. He served NECU as the Governing Board member and it’s Treasurer until 2018. He served as President of Senate of Serampore College (University) and a Chairperson of the Board of Theological Education from 2017 to 2019.
He is a teacher by profession, a leader by experience and a minister by calling. He teaches in the department of Communication with specialization in the field of Development and communication. He has authored a book ‘The Naga Communal Labour Force: An alternative Model of Communication and Development’, co-authored books and articles in various publishing books and journals. He was a chairman and chaplain of Naga Christian Fellowship, Bangalore (2001-2003) during his doctoral studies at Bangalore. He was also a member of the State Level Audit Advisor Board (SLAAB) of the Government of Nagaland, Audit General (AG).
“It is a proud moment for the North East people heading one of the largest organizations of inter-denominational Churches in India. We humbly pray that under his leadership we will be able to reach the Holy Bible to the unreached groups of people,” Auxiliary Secretary, BSI Dimapur added.
BSI has its Headquarter in Bangalore with its 17 Auxiliaries across India. It has Centre for Translation, Shillong for the NE India. BSI is a member of the United Bible Societies (UBS) with its Head Office in Swindon, England, which consists of 150 national Bible Societies operating in 240 countries. The United Bible Societies is the second largest organization in the world next to United Nations Organization.
