As many as 27 sitting MLAs lost their seats in the Nagaland Assembly Elections 2023 thereby indicating an anti-incumbency wave in the State.
Among the incumbent legislators who lost their seats, 9 were from the NDPP; 5 from the LJP (Ram Vilas); 5 from the NCP; 4 from the BJP; 1 each from the NPF and RPI (A); and 2 from the NPP.
Prominent names among this list were names such as Minister for Planning and Coordination, Land Revenue and Parliamentary Affairs, Neiba Kronu; Health Minister, Pangnyu Phom; Minister for Soil and Water Conservation, Geology and Mining, V Kashiho Sangtam; and Advisors like Dr Neikiesalie Nicky Kire, Mmhonlumo Kikon, Er Zale Neikha etc.
The NCP’s Toyang Chang from 53 Tuensang Sadar Assembly Constituency was the incumbent MLA who lost by the highest margin (5,644); followed by Advisor Longrineken, who contested on an LJP (Ram Vilas) ticket from 29 Jangpetkong Assembly Constituency (5,461 votes); and Minister S Pangnyu Phom from 50 Longleng who contested on a BJP ticket (5,270 votes).
At the other end of the spectrum, Minister H Khehovi (BJP) from 33 Surohoto was the sitting legislator who lost by the slimmest margin (69); followed by Advisor Medo Yhokha (NDPP) from 10 Northern Angami I who lost by 177 votes; and H Chuba Chang (NDPP) from 51 Noksen who lost by 188 votes.
