Security and police forces were deployed in Indisen Village, Dimapur on Saturday night following an alleged clash between supporters of two candidates from the Dimapur II Assembly Constituency.

According to the Dimapur Police, multiple gun shots were fired outside the residence of the Nationalist Democratic Progressive Party (NDPP) candidate Moatoshi Longkumer’s house.

As per the account of a member of the Indisen Youth Organisation, the incident occurred between 7:50-7:58 PM when a convoy of 6-7 vehicles headed inside the village for what they claimed was ‘election canvassing.’ The members alleged that some individuals in the convoy verbally provoked several supporters of the NDPP candidate. This reportedly led to a confrontation between supporters of the NDPP and Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), leading to 6-7 shots being fired.

During the confrontation few vehicles belonging to the LJP were damaged and two LJP supporters received minor injuries but are out of danger, Police said.

In the aftermath of the incident, security and police forces were deployed in the area to calm the tense situation. The damaged vehicles were later taken to the West Police Station and the Dimapur Police has taken cognisance of the incident.

‘LJP has filed an FIR, and we’re also receiving information that NDPP will file FIR. We will register both the cases and investigate accordingly,’ a police officer informed.

Investigations were ongoing at the time of filing this report, the police stated while assuring that the situation is completely under control.

Meanwhile, LJP (Ram Vilas) candidate Y Vikheho Awomi took to Twitter to condemn the incident. “I condemn the violence between my supporters & Shri. Moatoshi supporters at Indisen Village. The untoward incident was uncalled for.

I appreciate my supporters for not retaliating & escalating the situation. I urge upon the supporters to ensure peaceful, free & fair election,” the intending candidate stated in his tweet.
