Massive fire devastates 12 houses in Dimapur

A massive fire broke out in Sachü colony, Dimapur on February 16, devastating 12 houses and affecting 39 families in total.

The incident occurred at around 11:00 AM when one of the houses caught fire, in-turn spreading to all the adjacent houses, revealed Pastor Chosipilli Stephen one of the colony residents. “Within 20-25 minutes everything was burned down so we weren’t able to save any of the household items,” he added.

On contacting an official from West Fire Station, Dimapur he reported that three fire engines were pressed into action from West, Central and Chümoukedima fire stations. He mentioned that although the inferno had destroyed all the houses there were no reports of casualties. Officials were unable to ascertain the exact cause of the fire but the residents purported that it could be due to a short circuit. Furthermore, “We are yet to make an official estimate of the loss of damaged properties but will be assessing it with the help of their area gaonbura,” he said.

While interacting with the victims, they estimate that the losses could be above Rs 20 lakhs which included precious jewelleries and money.

Citizens join hands to help affected families
Meanwhile, concerned citizens from Dimapur came together during the day to help the affected families with food, water and money, shared David Zeliang, Youth Director of Hindi Baptist church. This included donations from the two intending candidates of Dimapur II A/C, Moatoshi Longkumer and Vikheho Awomi and the Dimapur Meitei Council.

Moreover, he disclosed that a majority of the affected families had members who were working as sanitation workers in the Dimapur Municipal Council (DMC), daily labourers and vegetable vendors. The fire devastated 12 houses in total and three nearby buildings also sustained considerable damage as well.

“Some of the families will be taking temporary shelter at the nearby government school while the rest are being taking refuge in with their relatives’ homes,” he said.
