The General Election to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly Election will be held on February 27, the Election Commission of India (ECI) announced on January 18.
Addressing a press conference in New Delhi, the Chief Election Commissioner (CEC) Rajiv Kumar informed that the single-phase Assembly elections in Nagaland will be held along with Meghalaya on February 27. In Tripura, the polling date is fixed on February 16.
“The Modal Code of Conduct (MCC) will now come into force in these three states,” he added, addressing the conference along with ECs Anup Chandra Pandey and Arun Goel.
After the ECI announcement, Nagaland Chief Electoral Officer (CEO), V Shashank Shekhar in an official release also informed that the MCC “comes into effect immediately” and all its provisions would apply to the whole State with regard to all Candidates, political parties, the State Government and to the Union Government.
Likewise, poll-related directives were issued by different district administrations.
Meanwhile, as per the information provided by the ECI at the press conference, the official notification for elections in Nagaland and Meghalaya will be issued on January 31.
The last date for nominations of candidates in the two states is set on February 7, to be followed by scrutiny on February 10. The last date for withdrawal of candidatures is February 10.
For Tripura, the last date for nominations is January 30. The scrutiny of nominations and the last date for withdrawal of candidatures respectively is January 31 and February 2.
The date of counting of votes for all three states will be held on March 2 and the process of elections in the three states will be completed by March 4.
Voters and polling stations
As per the finally published electoral roll, the total number of voters in Nagaland is 13,17,634, comprising of 13,09,651 general and 7,983 Service electors.
The number of enrolments of young electors who attained the age of 18 years between January 2, 2022, and January 1, 2023, stood at 24,689 in Nagaland.
As per the ECI data, there was no ‘Third Gender’ elector in Nagaland while 6,970 voters were designated as person with disability.
There are 36,403 senior citizens (80+) voters in the e-roll.
There will be 2315 polling stations (PSs) in Nagaland out of which 531 are located in urban areas while 1784 are rural, translating to 566 voters per station.
A total of 196 PSs will be managed by women and webcasting facilities will be provided in 71% or 196 PSs.
Meanwhile, CEC Bhatia told the press conference that the Commission had visited the three states during January 11-15 period and held detailed review meetings for the elections and further met political parties.
We have responded to almost all state-specific issues raised by them and measures have been put in place as per contextual and felt requirements of each state, he said.
The three states have more than 62.8 lakh electors combined including 31.47 lakh female electors, 97,000 80+ voters and 31,700 PwD voters.
The elector gender ratio in Nagaland and Meghalaya is over 1000 and in Tripura, it is 989 which is more than the national average of 969.
Over 1.76 lakh first-time voters will participate in the elections in 3 states, the CEC added.
