In the backdrop of the declaration of the general election for the state of Nagaland by the Election Commission of India on January 18, the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) maintained that announcement amid the high expectation of the implementation of the “agreed political solution” was a ‘painful slap to the aspiration of the people.

The announcement calls for a secular front through negotiation with political parties and winning the election to fulfil the aspiration of the people of Nagaland, NPCC president K Therie said, addressing a press conference in Dimapur.
This shall be finalised soon, he maintained.

Recalling promises and assurances by top leaders of the country as well as the state in the past, Therie stated: “The Prime Minister, 8 years ago said that Naga Political problem has been resolved; Ram Madhav termed 2018 as election for solution and Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio has always voiced for early solution but never paved way by resigning.”
Accordingly, he termed the non-fulfilment of these promises as “betrayals.”

To this end, the NPCC President opined that it was time for the people of Nagaland to make a firm decision.”

“Even if the Tripura and Meghalaya elections were announced, there was an expectation that elections in the state will be deferred to implement the agreed political solution till the last hour,” he said.

Therie further maintained that the Chief Minister was already aware of what was to take place and went to Delhi to do another seat-sharing and “offered BJP to pick any winning seat.”

Meanwhile, he alleged that the “RSS think-tank has conquered the mindset of the villagers” and called for the protection of “our cultures, customs and faith which was fast losing to these powers.”

To this end, the NPCC leader called upon the people to choose the right leader and claimed that the NPCC will also field their candidates and win the election to bring equality and justice to the people.

Many civil societies have come forward expressing the concern for implementation of an agreed political solution, he claimed.
