KOHIMA, JANUARY 13 (MExN):The All India Congress Committee’s (AICC)Screening Committee for the Nagaland Assembly elections held interactions with the Nagaland Pradesh Congress Committee (NPCC) and its frontal organizations at the Congress Bhavan, Kohima on January 12.

A press release issued by the NPCC general secretary, S Supongmeren Jamir, informed that the Screening Committee was led by Chairperson Mohan Prakash, Ex-Member of Parliament; AICC Secretary & Member of the Screening Committee, Sanjay Dutt and AICC Secretary in charge of Nagaland and Sikkim, Ranajit Mukherjee.

It said that in the meeting, Prakash outlined the purpose of the Committee— meeting with party workers and aspiring candidates, and the party’s objective to ouster the incumbent government.
“We are also having interactions with like-minded political parties and politicians to fight together to remove the present government, as Nagaland is presently going through a difficult and challenging time because the present government is indulged in non-governance and corruption, while people are suffering,” the release quoted Prakash as stating.

He accused the BJP government of scheming to remove Article 371 (A), as it did Article 370 from Kashmir, and “cheating the Naga cause” by not bringing any solution to the vexed Naga political problem because “they have no blueprint in their mind.”

“Chief MinisterNeiphiu Rio is the puppet of the Central government and the BJP and they are blackmailing the state government while the sufferers are the entire State,” he said.

While alleging failure in the state’s development front, Prakash regarded elections as chance for all to come together, for the benefit of Nagaland. Terming the Congress as warming up, he expressed confidence that the party, alongwith, likeminded parties would ouster the present government in the state.

AICC Secretary Sanjay Dutt said that the Committee, through the engagements with various party workers, has learnt about the concerns and issues of the Naga people. Censuring the BJP government’s alleged inclination for a “one nation, one religion” scheme, he described Nagaland as having“real unity in diversity,” and which should serve as a message to the country. “But unfortunately, the BJP by bringing the Citizenship Amendment Act (CAA) has shown its true colour that it wants to divide the nation on caste, religion and other parameters,” he said, while adding that the Congress will strongly stand up against any such move.

NPCC working President KhriediTheünuosaid that Nagaland needs a secular government, which will protect all minority groups, religion and every section of the society as opposed to the BJP’s cause for only one religion.

Meets NPF chief
The Screening Committee also met NPF President, Dr ShürhozelieLiezietsü. The NPCC’s Communications Department, in a separate statement, informed that the three members, accompanied by NPF Working President ThenuchoTunyi, gave a “courtesy visit” and shared concerns with Dr Liezietsü.

At a press conference on December 19, NPCC President, K Therie named the NPF as a likely ally in the election to the 14th Nagaland Legislative Assembly elections tentatively scheduled in February. The NPF had supported the Congress in the 2019 Lok Sabha polls for the Nagaland Parliamentary Constituency. In the 2018 Assembly polls, talks of a pre-poll tie up with the NPF, then in power, did not materialise, with the NPF going it alone.
