Union Minister of State for Jal Jeevan and Tribal Affairs, Government of India, Bishweswar Tudu today said that only 54% of the Jal Jeevan Mission (JJM) has been completed in the State of Nagaland and that a major area of the mission in the State has been affected due to the hilly terrain here.
He made this comment after a review meeting was held in this regard today in Kohima. The Union Minister is on his maiden visit to Nagaland. “Some projects which had faced issues would be looked after for improvement,” he informed.
While the Union Ministry is planning to complete the tap water connection project by end of 2023 or first quarter of 2024, Tudu said till now 57% of the whole project work in the country has been completed and 54% has been completed in the state. The Minister said the reason for the lag was challenges due to difficulty in finding sources to carry out work. He said the department has however assured to cover 80-90% the mission by 2023 end.
Looking at the Tribal Affairs Ministry, he said out of 11 Eklavya Model Residential Schools, 10 have started and one could not commence due to land issue.
He further informed that food processing units and handicrafts are also being marketed by the department, along with other developmental works. He also observed that most of the community halls are under construction.
The Union Minister said that tribal groups are also being encouraged to take up agri and horti based activities for economic promotion.
For development of the tribal people, a separate Ministry for Tribal Affairs Department was set up by the government to start developmental works. The Prime Minister has started projects to utilise at least Rs 25 lakhs for development of a village each, he added.
During his visit, the Minister will be visiting various developmental works under his ministry.
