Governor of Assam and Nagaland, Prof Jagdish Mukhi called for broadening the job horizon in Nagaland while inaugurating the National Innovate Integrate Expand (NIIE) Trade Fair at the NER Agri Expo in Chümoukedima on November 3. The 3-day business conclave, organised by the Business Association of Nagas with the support of the Ministry of Ministry of Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises (MSME), while showcasing local entrepreneurial products and potential, will also feature panel discussions centering on the scope of business in Nagaland and the associated wherewithal.
Prof Mukhi noted the Naga preoccupation with getting a job in the government establishment to the detriment of entrepreneurial growth. The fixation with government jobs has had young graduates applying even for contractual Grade IV jobs, as opposed to vying for jobs suiting their educational qualifications and skills, he said.
Terming the perceived drain of talent as “unfortunate,” he said that the youths should seek to venture into other occupational territory as well. “Nagaland has a young population. Naga youth today should take up entrepreneurship and create jobs. There are many schemes under the Ministry of MSME and initiatives by the central and state government which can be availed by young entrepreneurs to scale up,” he said.
According to him, the MSME sector has emerged as a dynamic sector of the Indian economy, which has not only played a crucial role in providing employment opportunities but also helped in industrialising rural India. The Make in India, Digital India, Start-up India, Stand-up India, Skill India and Smart Cities programmes, alongwith farmer-oriented initiatives are all parts of the attempt to “make economic reforms more meaningful to those at the grassroots,” he said.
Speaking of agriculture, he said that it is another area where the youth can invest. While stating that Nagaland has the most fertile soil, he said that the youths can venture into agriculture taking advantage of the various agri-oriented government schemes. He said, “You have land, invest in it. Government will help you… Self employment and giving employment to others is the way to economic growth.”
Ease of doing business was another crucial element pointed out by the Governor. On that note, he said that one of his first undertaking as Governor of Nagaland was to instruct the state government “to close all illegal check gates and collection centres,” which was putting extra burden on the business community and public in general.
The business summit will feature four panel discussions over the next two days. Local employment opportunities for the youth and the scope of agriculture— Logistics & Tourism are two topics up for discussion on November 4.
The Governor also launched the MSME-Development & Facilitation Office website and inaugurated exhibition stalls.
