Dimapur | October 17
The trees adorning the busy Dimapur’s Supermarket will be felled from today, as per an order issued by the Deputy Commissioner and Chairman, District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) Sachin Jaiswal on October 13.
The order came a day after the toppling of trees claimed two lives and injured six others on October 12, after city was inflicted by gusty winds.
While the alacrity of the DDMA’s order must have been in response to public reaction after the incident, a visit to ground zero on October 16 elicited mixed opinions from those operating daily activities from there.
When The Morung Express visited on Sunday, workers were seen busy uprooting poles or removing cables from the trees as directed by the DDMA’s October 13 order.
At the Walford end, an autodriver parked in the entrance said that the district administration’s directive is justified, though he was uncomfortable with the idea of cutting down all the trees, when queried further.
He, however, maintained, that it is better to cut down if it is not monitored properly by the concerned authorities.
Starting from the Walford end, a rough calculation by this newspaper resulted in counting of over 410 trees, of various sizes and heights; perhaps, one of the biggest green patches in the main city area.
While most trees were eucalyptus, other varieties included Delonix regia, popularly known as Gulmohar and Ficus religiosa or peepul tree.
At Nagarjan Police point, an auto driver was straight in his assessment.
“It will be too hot and unbearable,” he said, on the possibility of removing all the trees. However, he agreed that those decaying should be cut down and others left to be regularly monitored.
Why not, asserted a woman running a small paan kiosk near the parking lot. ‘Human lives matter more than the trees,’ she said, sharing there were two incidents trees toppling this year.
When prodded on the impact of blanket felling of the trees, she noted that while such action is drastic, it was better option leaving them without regular monitoring and care by concerned authorities.
A worker removing the poles threw-up his hands up in the air, when queried on the issue. Opinions on social media were also divided over the issue.
While the DDMA’s order did not specify whether there would complete felling of all trees, it is expected to be carried out on that line.
Meanwhile, the October 13 order stated that cutting of trees from Nagarjan Police Point to Walford Petrol Pump will be carried out from October 17-24.
Vehicular movement will remained suspended from the Dhansiri Bridge till Nagarjan Police Point from 5AM-5PM during the period.
In addition, there will be total power shutdown from 5AM-5PM during the intervening period for consumers residing in Supermarket area, Circuit House areas and Bank Colony, it added.
Any types of cables, wires, etc., strung between the trees within the stretch were asked to be removed before October 16.
In a separate release, the DC Dimapur informed all the vegetable and street vendors along the footpath stretch to immediately shift to the newly inaugurated marketing shed located at Supermarket area from October 13.
