Training on fire safety and prevention held across Nagaland

Kohima, June 21 (MExN): A two-day basic fire fighting training and fire safety audit inspection for different stakeholders is being organized by the Nagaland Fire and Emergency Services starting from June 20. The objective of the training was to spread mass awareness on fire safety, code of practice, dos and don’ts, etc, stated a DIPR report.

Kohima: The training on fire safety and prevention was held in Kohima at State Academy Hall. Speaking at the training, Inspector NFES, Sedevizo Hibo highlighted that to ensure the prevention of recurrence of fire incidents in institutional buildings like hospitals and nursing homes in the State, the Nagaland Fire and Emergency Services has been appointed as the nodal department to conduct Inspections and Fire Safety Audit of Hospitals and Nursing Homes (both Government and Private sectors) as per the National Building Code.

Hibo said that there have been five incidents in hospitals and nursing homes in the recent past in the country resulting in the unfortunate loss of lives and properties. He said the main objective of conducting training and seminar was to create awareness among the masses to disseminate advisories to prevent fire incidents in institutions like hospitals, nursing homes, and other public places as well as private institutions.

He also informed that all the government departments and all high-rise buildings, private and public, should be ensured with fire safety measures. Stating that failure to implement such measures on the part of officers, owners, and proprietors of any high-rise buildings would be liable to prosecution under relevant sections of law.

During the practical session, fire safety measures on prevention and protection from fire hazards was demonstrated by D Angami Keyho, ASI NFES, and Rescue Techniques on incidents and disasters was demonstrated by Kenilo Khing, FM NFES.

Representatives from various agencies and stakeholders from the state, and central government departments including government hospitals and nursing homes, schools, colleges, and educational institutions attended the training.

The second training session will be conducted on June 21 with participants from shopping complexes, markets, hotels, churches, and any high-rise building (15 meters), wards, colonies, and villages under the Kohima district.

Wokha: The training on basic fire fighting & fire safety audit & inspection was held at Tiyi Hall, Wokha. Deputy Commissioner Wokha, Ajit Kumar Ranjan, IAS, urged the trainees to impart the skills to their departments as well as in other sectors about fire safety. He suggested that awareness programmes should be imparted at the school level to inculcate in the minds of the children to take up preventive measures during any disaster. The DC further urged all citizens to follow Government guidelines which are streamlined for everyone’s safety.

Officer In- Charge, Fire Station Wokha, Keleseho Stephen Tsukru in the opening remark, said the objective of the training is to create awareness about the basics of fire fighting techniques, prevention, protection, and other life-saving measures to be taken up during fire accidents and disaster, and sought the co-operation of the public by way of giving the right and precise information during emergencies so that they may be able to save lives and properties.

During the technical session, resources personnel from Fire & Emergency Services, ASI, Haying, ASI Yibenthung, and SI, Menose dwelled on various topics like basics of fire, fire prevention& protection systems as per NBC 2016, and fire dos & don’ts. Later in the day, demonstration on the use of Fire Extinguishers was displayed to the trainees.

Phek: The training on basic fire safety inspection & audit/handling extinguisher was held at Bible Hill Colony, Phek.
INSP, Sheiya Konyak, delivering the welcome address, spoke on the importance of fire safety and how to handle the situation in times of fire outbreaks. Basic fire fighting, fire safety inspection & audit, handling of extinguishers, fire prevention & protection system, and forest fires were the topics spoken by the trainers. A demonstration was done on how to use a fire extinguisher.

Peren: During the programme held at Jalukie ‘B’ Village Council Hall, resource person, ASI Peren, F&ES, Kedigumlung Thou spoke on basic fire fighting, fire safety inspection & audit, handling of extinguishers, fire prevention & protection system, and forest fires.

Later, a demonstration of different types of fire extinguishers was also displayed by the Personnel of F&ES Peren.

Zunheboto: Department of Nagaland Fire & Emergency Services, simultaneously with the rest of the district in the state began a two days Fire Safety Training on Basic fire fighting, Fire Safety Inspection & Audit, Handling of fire extinguishers, Fire Prevention & Protection System and Forest Fires at town hall Zunheboto, on June 20.

Delivering his opening remarks on behalf of the district administration, SDO (C) Zunheboto, Athrong, said that, there are two means of disaster, natural and man-made and on larger occasions, it is unavoidable. “We can only wish that it does not happen,” he stated while encouraging people to be aware of the basic safety measures and be prepared for hazardous eventualities. He said that the training programme is being organised state wide for that specific purpose.

The training programme is being catalogued into two sessions covering all shopping malls, markets, hotels, churches, any high rise buildings (15 mtrs above), wards, colonies, villages and any stakeholders.

Mokokchung: The training is being organized at Town Hall, Mokokchung. On the first day, training was imparted to the representatives from all State and Central Government Departments including Government. Hospitals and Banks, and the same were followed by representatives from schools, colleges, universities, institutions, private hospitals & nursing homes.

On June 21, the training would be attended by members representing shopping malls, markets, hotels, churches and any high rising buildings (i.e. 15 meters) of private including residential, etc, which would be followed by representatives from Wards/Colony, Villages and any other stakeholders from 1:00 pm to 4:00 pm.
