Stating that Nagaland has a considerable shortage of All Indian Service officers, Y Patton, Deputy Chief Minister and Home Minister of Nagaland revealed that the State Government will be looking into ways to bring the two recent successful UPSC candidates, Viku L Achumi and Imsennaro Walling on deputation to Nagaland as and when required.

The Minister made the statement during the felicitation programme for the two Naga youngsters, organised by the Central Nagaland Students’ Association (CNSA) at Hotel Saramati, Dimapur on June 17.

He added, “most of our IAS and IPS officers who got Nagaland cadre are non-locals, soon after their training they try to go back to their own states on deputation.” He meanwhile encouraged, “wherever you may serve we will bring you on deputation one day even if you don’t get our state service.”

With few Naga officers in allied services, IPS and IAS officers who are in different cadres, Patton mentioned that, “they are also serving in Nagaland even today so don’t be discouraged as the State Government is behind you.”

“So even if you don’t get initial home cadre, Nagaland, the State will certainly need your services in the later years. And I am confident that a request will be made to the concerned authorities by the State for your deputation in compliance with the service rules as and when required,” the Minister said.

Besides this, Patton noted that it takes a lot of dedication, hard work and sacrifice to be successful and said that the two have proven that no hurdle is too difficult if one has the zeal and determination to achieve it. He therefore urged the two fledgling civil servants to inspire others in the near future.

During the programme, Viku Achumi spoke about the failures and persistence of great individuals such as Thomas Edison and Abraham Lincoln whose grit and perseverance, people still look upon today. “It took me five attempts and five years to get to where I am today,” he said while continuing that “had I given up then, today I would not be standing here addressing the gathering.”

Further, he reminded the youths to assess their capabilities before embarking on their journeys in life. He also noted the importance of one’s physical and mental prowess and to never neglect them.

Imsennaro Walling on the other hand spoke about the challenges that she faced during her UPSC preparation upon which “they had only strengthened me and made me the person I am today.” She remarked that working with the underprivileged and vulnerable sections of society, during her college days had invigorated in her the desire to serve the community in a larger capability.

Ending with an encouragement towards other Naga youths she stated, “we are capable of achieving anything if we set our hearts and minds to it.”

R Sunep Pongen, President, CNSA expressed his appreciation to the two candidates by commenting that “words are not enough to express for the achievements they’ve made. It is very rare to see Nagas come up in the mainstream examinations.”
