Kohima, May 19 (MExN): Gauhati High Court Judge and Executive Chairman of the Nagaland State Legal Services Authority (NSLSA) Justice Songkhupchung Serto today handed over a cheque amount of Rs 8 lakh to the father of a victim as Victim Compensation under the NSLSA Compensation Scheme for Women Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault/other Crimes-2018 at the Gauhati High Court, Kohima Bench.
The cheque was handed over in the presence of Gauhati High Court Registrar, Neiko Akami, NJS NSLSA, Member Secretary, Victo Sema, NJS along with NSLSA Project Officials, according to a press release from the NSLSA PRA, Ketholeno Neihu.
As per the release, during the financial year 2021-2022, a total of 27 compensation applications were received last year further recommended through DLSAs and NSLSA and forwarded to the State Home Department, Government of Nagaland (Relief & Rehabilitation) for sanctioning the final amount. The compensation of 16 applicants from different districts (DLSAs) amounting to Rs 54 lakh have been sanctioned and 11 are pending, the release stated.
The release informed that victim compensation is rolled out in two schemes including the Nagaland Victim Compensation Scheme, 2012 and NSLSA Compensation Scheme for Women Victims/Survivors of Sexual Assault/other Crimes-2018. Victim Compensation Scheme was introduced to give compensation to victims or dependents who have suffered loss or injury as a result of crime and those who require rehabilitation.
Applicants can submit applications before the Legal Services Authority of the state and attach it with an FIR, medical reports, and a copy of the judgment or recommendation, if the case has been disposed off.
After scrutiny, the compensation is awarded based on factors such as gravity of the offence, loss of livelihood, age (in case of death), monthly income, number of dependents, and if the crime is an isolate incident or part of a series over a period of time, the release stated.
