Union defence minister Rajnath Singh, who arrived here on Monday to take part in BJP’s election campaign in the State, assured to bring an end to militancy problems in North Eastern region of the country.
Addressing an election meeting in Imphal West district, he assured that the Central government was always prepared to talk with militant outfits for a lasting solution to the insurgency problem and stop violence in Manipur and other North-eastern States permanently.
The Union Minister steered clear of any commitment on the future of the controversial Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act or AFSPA in the region – at a time when opposition, as well as regional allies from Northeast, have made the repeal of AFSPA as a key poll plank.
“Militant groups must come forward to talk with the government to resolve their problems. Violence has to be stopped permanently for undertaking developmental projects and welfare schemes for the benefit of the people. Violence has been largely controlled in Manipur under the dynamic leadership of chief minister N Biren Singh,” he mentioned.
Singh claimed that BJP had its kept its promise of putting a check on insurgency and violence in the country. “We have brought down insurgency-related violence incidents and we put an end to it in coming years,” he said.
The Union minister alleged that Congress during its 70 years rule had completely neglected Manipur and other North-eastern States.
Due to this prolonged neglect, he said the region was lagging behind in all sectors. There was no development at all in the region and it remained isolated from the mainland, he added.
But ever since BJP formed government at the Centre in 2014, he claimed that the country was marching ahead on all fronts, while the pace of developmental also picked up in the region.
He said it was shameful that even after 75 years of Independence, there was no railway connectivity in Manipur.
Mentioning that Manipur had now been brought in the railway map of the country, Singh said this was possible because people of the State had given BJP a chance to form the government five years ago in 2017.
Recalling that Manipur was earlier known for month-long blockades, he took pride in stating that there were no more bandhs and blockades in the State now. He said BJP brought an end to this culture of bandhs and blockade.
Manipur will go to polls to elect 60 members to the Legislative Assembly in two phases – February 28 and March 5.
Meanwhile, Election Commission of India (ECI) announced certain relaxations in poll campaigning in the backdrop of improvement in Covid-19 situation in the State. The ban on campaign will now be between 10 pm to 6 am instead of the earlier 8 pm to 8 am.
ECI has also allowed political parties and candidates to hold meetings and rallies up to a maximum of 50 per cent of the capacity of the designated open spaces or the limit prescribed by State Disaster Management Authority, whichever is lesser.
