Manipur needs BJP to make its future, said party leader and Union law and justice minister Kiren Rijiju in a speech at the ‘Mega Yuva Conclave’ of the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha, Manipur Pradesh held in Imphal THAU Ground on Sunday.

“We are seeking blessings from the people of Manipur because we want to make the future of the state. People must not waste their valuable votes to the Congress,” Rijiju added.

He said that it was in the hands of the people to avoid revisiting the dark period while terming the Congress rule as a “dark period.”

The Union minister accused the Congress for the communal divide in the country stating that dividing people on community lines is part of the party’s habitual divide and rule policy.

Stating that it was after the BJP came to power that communal harmony re-visited the country, he claimed that there was no communal clash occurred across the state after the Narendra Modi led BJP’s NDA government came to power in the country.

He said that there were ridges among the various communities in Manipur too, citing divisions among the majority communities –Meiteis, Nagas and Kukis during the Congress rule.

Rijijuwent on to claim that since the BJP-led coalition government came to power in the state there were no divisions among the communities.

As peace was prevalent, the government concentrated on welfare and developmental activities which brought about changes in the state, he added. Rijiju further claimed that there was a tremendous change in the state since the BJP-led government was installed five years ago. He recalled that he had visited Manipur on different occasions, first time in 1994 and said that changes were witnessed only in the last few years, after the BJP-led coalition was installed.

There were lots of developments in every sector in the state and to maintain this flow of development, there was the need for retaining the BJP in power.

All these changes were possible because the BJP-led government brought an end to the bandh and blockade culture and people of the state led a tension free life now.

Before the BJP came to power, there were frequent bandhs, blockades on national highways and strikes. The hard work of ending these strikes that hindered the developmental activities should not be allowed to go in vain by diverting votes to the Congress and other regional parties, he said.

“People must elect the BJP this time with absolute majority. People must not divert their mind. Besides, the saffron will remain in power at the Centre further,” he added. Rijiju claimed that BJP’s concern for the welfare and development of Manipur and other northeast states was reflected in the recent Union budget provision too.

The Union minister, who was in Nagaland on a one-day visit to the state on Saturday, arrived in Imphal today to take part in the election campaigns of the BJP in the poll-bound state.

Manipur will go to poll to elect 60 members of the state Assembly in two phases –February 28 and March 5.

In the first phase, polling will be held for 38 seats spread over six districts , a total of 173 candidates including 15 women were in the fray while as many as 96 candidates filed their nomination papers for the second phase poll in 22 seats spread across 10 districts of the state.

The nomination papers will be taken up for scrutiny on Monday and the last date for withdrawal of candidates is February 16, after which the exact number of candidates to be contested for will be known.

The BJP, leading a coalition government, is fielding its candidates in all the 60 seats.
