Cong, NPP demand repeal of AFSPA from NE in Parliament

Voicing the opposition’s demand for repealing the Armed Forces Special Powers Act (AFSPA) from the North Eastern states, Leader of the Congress (LoP) in the Lok Sabha Adhir Ranjan Chowdhary on Friday said that the common people are against such kind of laws brought in by the central government and due to this, the Act has lost its credibility.

He also pointed out that people have been agitating against the central government’s acts because it has been misused by the government and furthermore, people are harassed and are subjected to various kinds of oppression.

Chowdhary, who was speaking in the Parliament, also referred to the Nagaland civilian killings that took place earlier in December 2021, and said that the government should consider repealing such kind of anti-people act from the North Eastern states.

In a similar manner, the National People’s Party (NPP) MLA and an ally of BJP, Agatha Sangma, also while speaking in the Lok Sabha, requested the Centre to consider the sentiments of the North East people and further repeal AFSPA.

NPF appeals Centre to repeal AFSPA

DIMAPUR, FEB 5 (NPN): Central Office Bearers (COB) of the NPF has appealed to the government of India for immediate repeal of AFSPA from Nagaland and also from the entire North East region as well.

This was among the six-point resolution adopted by the COB during an emergency meeting held on Saturday at its Central office in Kohima, NPF press bureau stated.

COB also urged government of India and the Naga negotiating parties to come to a logical conclusion on the Naga political issue at the earliest. The house further welcomed the resolution of the working committee in extending invitation to the regional parties to come together in the larger interest of the people.

COB resolved to wholeheartedly work for the success of the NPF candidates in upcoming Manipur assembly polls and appealed to all the NPF ticket aspirant, who were denied party ticket, to extend support to the official candidates.

The house endorsed the party president to decide the date and venue of the General Convention of the party as it was already due to be summoned.
COB also appreciated the UDA government for according recognition to Tikhir Tribe as one of the recognised tribes of Nagaland

Earlier, speaking on the occasion, NPF working president Apong Pongener reminded the meeting that NPF belongs to the Nagas and the party itself represents the identity and the desire of the Nagas.

Pongener called upon the party leaders to remain steadfast in their stand so that the people will have trust in the party for the safety of their future.
Speaking on the occasion, NPF secretary ceneral Achumbemo Kikon briefed the meeting on how the party selected the 10 candidates of Manipur elections. Even in non-Naga tribal areas, he said there were many ticket aspirants but the party zeroed down to 10 seats only.

The meeting was chaired by senior vice president Pusazo Lürüo while invocation prayer was pronounced by senior vice president Tsumongo Ovung and vote of thanks by general secretary, Povotso Lohe.
The meeting was followed by business hour where other leaders spoke on various issues confronting the party.
