Correspondent KOHIMA, JAN 22 (NPN): After Shamator was made a district recently, which was a long pending demand, it appears there are demands for creation of more districts in Nagaland. The latest demand comes from Pochury tribal leaders who have resolved to push for the demand to upgrade Meluri sub-division under Phek district into a full-fledged district.
The state cabinet on December 18, 2021 approved creation of three new districts– Tseminyu, Chümoukedima and Niuland and Shamator in January this year.
According to sources, a meeting on upgradation of Meluri subdivision was held at the residence of NPF legislator Yitachu on January 20. The meeting was reportedly attended by representatives of Pochury Hoho, Pochury Kajipa Organisation, Pochury GB Union, Pochury Mothers’ Association, Pochury Youth Front, Pochury Students’ Union and Pochury Literature Board.
Sources informed Nagaland Post that the meeting deliberated at length on the move to pursue for upgradation of Meluri sub-division into a full-fledged district. Sources said the house resolved to organise a “peace rally” by the first week of February at Meluri town for immediate upgradation of Meluri sub-division. The meeting also decided to submit a memorandum to chief minister Neiphiu Rio in support of Meluri district.
Though chief minister Neiphiu Rio, during the cabinet meeting held on December 18 last year, asserted that his government would not bifurcate areas that are inhabited by one tribe, yet demands for upgradation of sub-divisions to a full-fledged have also grown louder, buoyed by the creation of four new districts.
Besides Meluri, there are also demands for upgradation Tobu sub-division under Mon district, Bhandari sub-division under Wokha district and Mangkolemba under Mokokchung district– as full fledged districts.
It may be pointed out that the Aboi District Demand Committee had served an ultimatum on the state government to declare Aboi as district on or before January 23, 2022. While urging the concerned authority to take the matter into serious consideration, ADDC warned the government that if it failed to respond positively to its ultimatum, the committee would take up its own course of action.
It reminded that the demand for up-gradation of Aboi ADC HQ to district HQ was officially initiated in 2008 and was subsequently included in the cabinet memo of 2011.
