State loses 337 sq km of bamboo bearing area: ISFR 2021

DIMAPUR, JAN 21 (NPN): India State of Forest Report (ISFR) 2021 released recently showed that Nagaland has lost 337 sq km of bamboo bearing area when compared to ISFR 2019.

ISFR 2021 prepared by the Forest Survey of India (FSI), which has been mandated to assess the forest and tree resources of the country, was released by Union Minister for Environment, Forest and Climate Change, Bhupender Yadav, on January 13, 2022.

As per ISFR 2019, bamboo bearing area in Nagaland was 4,284 sq km, but decreased to 3,947 sq km as per ISFR 2021—change of 337 sq km.

As per the ISFR 2021, the total bamboo bearing area of the country has been estimated to be 15.0 million ha with Madhya Pradesh having maximum bamboo bearing area of 1.84 m ha followed by Arunachal Pradesh (1.57 million ha), Maharashtra (1.35 million ha) and Odisha (1.12 million ha).

As compared to the estimates of ISFR 2019, the total bamboo bearing area in the country has decreased by 1.06 million ha. Comparing state wise area of present assessment with ISFR 2021, it has been observed that bamboo bearing area in Mizoram has shown highest increase of 1,085 sq km followed by Arunachal Pradesh (758 sq km).

As per state wise bamboo bearing area under different classes in recorded forest area (RFA), Nagaland has 172 sq km of pure bamboo area, 772 sq km of dense bamboo area, 2,917 sq km of scattered and 86 sq km of regeneration of bamboo.

On analysing the forest area of different States according to bamboo density, it has been observed that the pure bamboo brakes are found in less than 1%, dense bamboos in about 4% and scattered bamboos in about 12% of the RFA.

It was also found that the weight of green sound culms was maximum in Arunachal Pradesh (38.08 million tonnes) followed by Assam (33.98 million tonnes) and Nagaland (24.04 million tonnes).
