Railways to reach Kohima soon, says NFR GM

Correspondent KOHIMA, DEC 3 (NPN) : Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR) general manager Anshul Gupta said the railways was working very hard to bring train services to the State Capital very soon.

Speaking as guest of honour on Day-2 of Hornbill festival at Kisama on Thursday, he said once trains start running from Kohima, tourist footfalls would increase, which would give a huge boost to tourism sector in the State.

He said economic activities would gather pace as inflow of tourists would create job opportunities.

Mentioning that the railway line would also lead to development of health infrastructure, Gupta mentioned that Indian Railways would not only invest in railway tracks but in other facilities too as there would be eight rail stations.

Gupta claimed that NFR had requested the State government for support in making the architecture of each station reflect the rich culture and heritage of a particular tribe, adding that the railways was working closely with the State government in this regard.

The general manager said railways was taking up two more projects – developing Dimapur railway station and making Kohima a world class station.

It may be mentioned that Dimapur-Kohima new line project was sanctioned in 2007-2008 with a revised length of 82.5 km. It was declared a national project in May 2017 and runs through Assam (2.75 km) and Nagaland (79.75 km) covering East Karbi Anglong, Dimapur and Kohima. The stations will be at Dhansiri, Dhansiripar, Shokhuvi, Molvom, Pherima, Piphema, Mrengujuma and Zubza.

The 82.5-km-long line will connect existing Dhansiri station near Dimapur to Zubza near Kohima. The project has divided into three phases for ease of commissioning.

Phase I- (16.5 km) Dhansiri-Sukhovi section witnessed commissioner of railway safety inspection on October 23 this year and received authorisation, while Phase II- (28 km) Sukhovi-Pherima section is targeted for completion in July 2023 and Phase III (38 km) Pherima-Zubza is scheduled to be completed in March 2026.

The project will have tunnels covering 29.02-km, two important bridges, 22 major bridges, eight stations, four road overbridges and 32 road under-bridges and limited height subways.
