Correspondent DIMAPUR/Mokokchung, Oct 18 (NPN) : District Congress Committees (DCCs) of Dimapur and Mokokchung celebrated the 90th birthday of Dr. S C Jamir, five times chief minister of Nagaland and former Governor of Goa, Odhisa, Gujarat and Maharashtra on July 17.
In a press release, the committee stated that on the occasion, Dimapur DCC president, Tsenthungo Nyamo gave a brief history of Dr. S C Jamir.
Chairman minority department, Rajesh Kumar Sethi in his short speech stated that Senayangba Chubatoshi Jamir, the grandson of Jongshinokdang, who in the late 19th century, had the providential opportunity to meet the American Christian Missionary, Rev. W.E. Clark and was instrumental in bringing Christianity to Nagaland.
He described Jamir as a legend, the pride of India, an icon of Northeast who had achieved many awards. He also mentioned that Jamir was offered Vice President of India but he refused that post because he wanted to serve the people of Nagaland.
Jamir won all the elections, except the last by-election, Sethi said adding that Dr. Jamir was close to Sethi family since statehood. He recalled how his grandfather late Kannayalal Sethi happened to be the first GB of Dimapur town and that during his presidentship, Jamir appointed his father late Pannalal Sethi as treasurer and became NPCC secretary during his time.
Earlier, during the morning hours, party workers visited Dr. Jamir at his residence and conveyed birthday wishes to him. Dr. Jamir expressed his gratitude through a hand written note which read as: “I am deeply moved to see the kind of support and appreciation exhibited by congress men & women on my 90th birthday. i will continue to pray for the resurrection of this party in the land to once again provide true and honest leadership to the country: S C Jamir.” DABA pastor, Imnatoshi Longkumer pronounced prayer of blessing for Dr. SC Jamir. Earlier, the programme chaired by Odinungsang, GS Enrolment, DCC began with an invocation by DDMCC general secretary, Abino Kikon while special number was presented by Tokhuli Yepthomi and Kevin Newar.
In Mokokchung, DCC celebrated the birthday of Dr. S.C. Jamir at its party HQ office. While highlighting a brief sketch on the life of former chief minister and Governor, the DCC general secretary (Administration) P Aley stated that Dr. S C Jamir was the son of late Senayangba and late Takatula of Ungma village, who was born on October 17, 1931. P Aley stated that Jamir was conferred the ‘Padma Bhusan’, by the government of India and further conferred an Honorary Doctorate by the University of Cambodia in 2017. About Dr. SC Jamir’s political life, P Aley stated that he was one of the signatories of the 16th Point Agreement which brought about the state of Nagaland and is today considered as the ‘Architect of Modern Nagaland’.
He said that Jamir, who is one of the longest serving Chief Minister of Nagaland, had, earlier, served as Union Deputy Minister government of India, under various ministries and later appointed as the Parliamentary Secretary to Prime Minister Jawaharlal Nehru, who was a member of the UN delegation, Representing India in 1962.
Jamir had also served as the Governor of Goa, Maharastra, Gujurat and Odissa and presently is a Political Affairs Committee member, playing a driving force for the Congress party in Nagaland as well as at the National level.
While delivering short speeches, ex-MLA and vice-president NPCC, Supongmeren described Dr. Jamir as a “God fearing man and a man of his word”, while NPCC vice-president, Alemjongshi said “he is a tall leader whose wisdom should be sought”. NPCC legal advisor, Maongkaba described Dr. Jamir as “a man principles, integrity with a big heart” and the present generation should emulate him. Moangkaba further described him as a ‘walking library’, whose knowledge should be tapped.
NPCC general secretary, Sashimar appealed to the party members to “walk the talk”, as portrayed by Dr. Jamir and further stated that he (Dr. SC Jamir) should be most befitting to be called “The Iron Man of Naga politics”. A special prayer for Dr. SC Jamir was said by ex-pastor, MTBA Rev. Luin Jamir and the welcome note was delivered by DCC Mahila vice-president Rongsenla while the celebratory programme was chaired by DCC president Watimongba. Later, DCC Mokokchung distributed food items, in honour of the birthday celebration to Orphanage under Care & Support Society, Sabangya, District Jail Inmates, COVID 19 Hospital patients and COVID-19 Care Centre, Yimyu.
