DC WOKHA CALLS FOR CONCERTED EFFORTS TO TACKLE CLIMATE CHANGE
DIMAPUR , September 15: District level workshop on “building capacities for taking forward the SDGs” was held in the conference hall of the deputy commissioner (DC) on September 13. The programme was chaired by district planning officer, P. Nchumbemo Kikon.
According to a DIPR report, while delivering the keynote address, DC Wokha, Orenthung Lotha introduced the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and emphasised on how there should be concentrated efforts by all stakeholders to bring about sustainable development. Climate change is a global phenomenon which involves loss of human lives and property thus we need concerted efforts to bring sustainable development, DC said.
He also pointed out that the root cause of climate change was due to human induced greenhouse emission, insufficient disaster risk management and under valuing environmental cause and benefit in decision making.
DC highlighted the effect of climate change across the globe and in Wokha district as well.
He took the example of drought-like situation in the district where, he said, many farmers were suffering due to human-induced activities that have caused climate change.
Orenthung also stated that SDG has been adopted by all United Nations members States in 2015 as a universal call to action to end poverty, protect the planet and ensure that all people enjoy peace and prosperity by 2030, the SDGs are a collection of 17 global goals and associated 169 targets designed to be a blueprint to achieve a better and more sustainable future for all.
He urged departments to ensure that all policies and actions undertaken are carried out to protect the environment and to achieve targets of SDGs for inclusive development.
As part of this workshop, the first technical session was conducted by SDG officer, SDG coordination centre, planning & coordination department, Abilo Humtsoe on SDG localization and integration with a focus on Wokha district.
She talked about the national, state and district level institutional mechanism and strategy for SDG implementation, district indicator framework for monitoring SDGs and way forward.
SDG officer, SDG coordination centre, planning & coordination department, Phyobemo Lotha conducted an interactive session which consisted of interactive exercises for identifying priority areas and viable local level solutions for Wokha district.
The workshop concluded with vote of thanks by district planning officer where he highlighted the significance of all the activities for long-term development of the district.
The workshop was attended by superintendent of police Menangmeren and other district-level department officials.
Similar district level workshops have been held in Kiphire, Noklak, Tuensang, Longleng, Mokokchung and Zunheboto districts for taking forward the SDGs. In order to make SDG implementation holistic and inclusive, the same have been planned for the remaining districts of Nagaland.
