Excise deptt destroys illicit liquor worth Rs.4.11 cr

Staff Reporter DIMAPUR, JUL 24 (NPN): State excise department destroyed a total of 1.37 lakh bottles of assorted illicit Indian Made Foreign Liquor (IMFL) worth Rs.4.11 crore during a combined destruction programme of seized liquor by excise mobile squad Dimapur and narcotic cell conducted at excise directorate complex here on Friday.

The destruction was carried out in the presence of commissioner excise and prohibition, additional commissioner of excise and other officials.

At a brief programme, commissioner of excise and prohibition, Hotolu Swu, lauded the excise district office, narcotic cell, enforcement and mobile squad for their commendable job and contribution in fight against the liquor menace. Also, speaking at the programme, additional commissioner of excise, Kevisetuo Angami, said that it was an auspicious day for excise saying that the hard work and effort shows that they were trying to do their best.

Describing the seizure as “huge”, Angami encouraged all rank and file of the department to continue to keep up the good work.

Asserting that the department alone cannot control the liquor menace because it was a “social issue”, Kevisetuo, therefore, called for collective responsibility in creating awareness and addressing the issue. He said the department with meagre resources had a “gigantic task”.

Giving a brief report of narcotic cell, the deputy commissioner of excise (NC) Chanlei Angh stated that liquor items were seized from July 2020 till June 2021.

During the period, Angh pointed out that 345 total number of cases were registered under NLTP Act’89, 346 persons were apprehended and a fine amounting to Rs.4.05 lakh was realized by the department.

The seized liquor comprised of 9384 bottles of IMFL and 7549 cans/bottles of beer.

Also presenting report of excise mobile squad Dimapur from the period July 15, 2020 to July 14, 2021, the superintendent of excise and prohibition (MS) Dimapur K Toshiho Yeptho pointed out that a total of 26, 052 bottles of assorted IMFL were seized. He also disclosed that during the same period a total of 269 cases were detected and 269 persons were arrested. Yeptho informed that the mobile squad deposited revenue of Rs.3.16 lakh. He said total market value of the seized items was Rs.36.65 lakh.

Superintendent of excise and prohibition, Dimapur, T Arilong Longkumer, who presented seizure report from period January 1, 2021 to July 15, 2021, pointed out that a total of 94214 bottles of assorted IMFL articles were seized during the same period. He said 141 cases were detected while total amount of fine realized was Rs.3.27 lakh.

The combined destruction programme was chaired by deputy commissioner of excise (HQ) Moarenba and inspector of excise of excise (NC) Osenrhoni Kikon said the invocation prayer.

Later, vote of thanks was proposed by assistant commissioner of excise (ENF) Katoho Sumi followed by destruction of the seized items.
