As per details from Census 2011, Nagaland has population of 19.79 Lakhs, an decrease from figure of 19.90 Lakh in 2001 census. Total population of Nagaland as per 2011 census is 1,978,502 of which male and female are 1,024,649 and 953,853 respectively.

In 2001, total population was 1,990,036 in which males were 1,047,141 while females were 942,895. The total population growth in this decade was -0.58 percent while in previous decade it was 64.41 percent. The population of Nagaland forms 0.16 percent of India in 2011. In 2001, the figure was 0.19 percent.

Nagaland Literacy Rate 2011
Literacy rate in Nagaland has seen upward trend and is 79.55 percent as per 2011 population census. Of that, male literacy stands at 82.75 percent while female literacy is at 76.11 percent. In 2001, literacy rate in Nagaland stood at 66.59 percent of which male and female were 71.16 percent and 61.46 percent literate respectively. 

In actual numbers, total literates in Nagaland stands at 1,342,434 of which males were 723,957 and females were 618,477.

Total area of Nagaland is 16,579 sq. km. Density of Nagaland is 119 per sq kmwhich is lower than national average 382 per sq km. In 2001, density of Nagaland was 120 per sq km, while nation average in 2001 was 324 per sq km.

Sex Ratio in Nagaland is 931 i.e. for each 1000 male, which is below national average of 940 as per census 2011. In 2001, the sex ratio of female was 900 per 1000 males in Nagaland.

Nagaland Religious Data

Christianity is most popular religion in Nagaland with 87.93 % of state population following the same. Hinduism is second most popular religion in Nagaland state with 8.75 % following it. In Nagaland state, Islam is followed by 2.47 %, Jainism by 0.13 %, Buddhism by 0.34 % and Sikhism by 0.10 %. Around 0.16 % stated ‘Other Religion’, approximately 0.12 % stated ‘No Particular Religion’. 

Nagaland Urban Population 2011

Out of total population of Nagaland, 28.86% people live in urban regions. The total figure of population living in urban areas is 570,966 of which 299,177 are males and while remaining 271,789 are females. The urban population in the last 10 years has increased by 28.86 percent. 

Sex Ratio in urban regions of Nagaland was 908 females per 1000 males. For child (0-6) sex ratio the figure for urban region stood at 973 girls per 1000 boys. Total children (0-6 age) living in urban areas of Nagaland were 73,589. Of total population in urban region, 12.89 % were children (0-6). 

Average Literacy rate in Nagaland for Urban regions was 89.62 percent in which males were 91.62% literate while female literacy stood at 78.30%. Total literates in urban region of Nagaland were 445,771.

Nagaland Rural Population 2011

Of the total population of Nagaland state, around 71.14 percent live in the villages of rural areas. In actual numbers, males and females were 725,472 and 682,064 respectively. Total population of rural areas of Nagaland state was 1,407,536. The population growth rate recorded for this decade (2001-2011) was 71.14%. 

In rural regions of Nagaland state, female sex ratio per 1000 males was 940 while same for the child (0-6 age) was 933 girls per 1000 boys. In Nagaland, 217,482 children (0-6) live in rural areas. Child population forms 15.45 percent of total rural population. 

In rural areas of Nagaland, literacy rate for males and female stood at 78.96 % and 66.50 %. Average literacy rate in Nagaland for rural areas was 75.35 percent. Total literates in rural areas were 896,663.
