Mokokchung tops single-day Covid +ve case count
DIMAPUR, JUN 6 (NPN): After showing a steady decline in Covid-19 positive cases in the past week, the numbers on Saturday drastically shot up as the state reported 309 fresh cases, while number of deaths dropped to six. Of the fresh cases, Mokokchung reported 164 cases, Kohima-55, Dimapur-33, Mon -29, Tuensang-15, seven in Longleng, four in Kiphire and one each Peren and Phek, taking the total caseload to 22,696.
Out of six fatalities, two each were reported in Dimapur and Mokokchung and one each in Kohima and Zunheboto. With this the death toll rose to 422 out of which 14 were non-Covid deaths but with Covid positivity.
Meanwhile, the Health department’s data showed a disturbing single-day spike of 164 new Covid positive cases in Mokokchung district, surpassing the most affected districts– Dimapur and Kohima in its daily single-day case record.
It was learnt that most cases were detected after the Mokokchung District Task Force recently carried out ‘active case finding’ drive for Covid-19 in all the wards on Mokokchung town. The deputy commissioner, Limawabang Jamir had on May 29 issued a circular directing residents of Mokokchung town to remain at home and refrain from venturing out, unless for emergency purpose, so that the DTF and medical department could carry out the random testing.
According to the weekly bulletin issued by the Health department, the total new cases showed a decline for two weeks in a row while deaths also showed a marginal decline for the first time in a month.
It, however, said that “52% deaths have happened within 2 days of admission in a hospital signifying very late arrival with critical symptoms.”
The department further pointed out that “21 deaths were under home isolation and did not even reach the hospital”. The department called for strict monitoring of symptoms under home isolation and also advised seeking immediate medical attention before it was too late, adding that “wait and watch is proving costly”.
