COVID-19 cases breach 16000-mark in Nagaland

Nagaland’s tally of COVID-19 infections crossed the 16000-mark on Sunday with the confirmation of 237 new cases.

Barely 4 days after crossing the 15000-mark on May 5, the state’s cumulative caseload reached 16,150 indicating a steady surge in active cases. This is the second time the gap between each 1000 COVID-19 cases was crossed within a span of 4 days.

As per the daily bulletin issued by the health department’s Integrated Disease Surveillance Programme (IDSP), out of 1,136 samples, 237 returned positive on Sunday, indicating a test positivity rate of 20.86%.

128 cases were from Kohima, 89 from Dimapur, 5 from Mon, 4 from Tuensang while Phek, Mokokchung and Longleng reported 3 cases each and Peren reported 2 new cases.

Out of the 237 cases, 211 were traced contacts, 9 were returnees/travellers while 14 were security forces/armed personnel and 3 were frontliners.

As per the bulletin, 3 more COVID fatalities were reported on Sunday taking the death toll to 130. This is excluding 10 other deaths that were categorised as ‘not COVID related’ after scrutiny by the state COVID death review committee.

On the other hand, 128 patients who previously tested positive for the virus have recovered. Of these, 86 were from Kohima, 37 from Dimapur, 4 from Mon and 1 from Mokokchung.

As of May 9, the cumulative tally of positive cases in Nagaland stands at 16,150 with 12,687 recoveries and 2,809 active cases.

District-wise status
In the bulletin, the district-wise break up of cases indicated a total of 2,810 active cases as opposed to the official figure of 2,809. When contacted, State Nodal Officer for IDSP said that the difference would be ‘reconciled’ the next day.

Dimapur had the highest number of active cases at 1,838, followed by Kohima with 765 and Mon with 68 active cases. Among the other districts, Mokokchung has 49 active cases, Tuensang 34, Longleng 19, Peren, Phek and Zunheboto has 10 cases each, Kiphire has 4 and Wokha 3, as per the bulletin.

As per severity of cases, 2,536 are said to be asymptomatic, 131 with mild symptoms, 46 ‘moderate on oxygen,’ 78 ‘severe on oxygen,’ while 11 are in the ICU with oxygen and 8 are on ventilator.

Over 2 lakh people vaccinated in Nagaland

Dimapur, May 9 (MExN): Nagaland has so far vaccinated a total of 2,25,361 people for COVID-19, according to updates from the State Immunization Officer (UIP) Dr Ritu Thurr on Sunday. Out of the total, 1,17,113 people including those above the age of 45, frontline workers and health care workers have received the first dose while 48,248 have received the second dose.
