Over 12,000 doses of the COVID-19 vaccine have been administered in Phek district. They are being administered at one District hospital, three Community Health Centres in Chozuba, Pfutsero and Meluri, and 26 Primary Health Centres.

The district currently has approximately 4,000 doses of vaccine in stock, informed Dr Kolhitso Khalo, District Immunization Officer (DIO), Phek.

“These will last hardly a week because we cover about 500 beneficiaries every day”, he told The Morung Express. With the Centre announcing that everyone above 18 years of age can avail vaccination from May 1, he said “we are expecting more vaccines from the State.” “Without getting more supply we cannot call everyone above 18 to come and get vaccinated,” he stated

Echoing the same sentiments, Dr Limatoshi, District Epidemiologist, Phek also said “our vaccine is almost getting over,” while hoping that the State will provide sufficient supply. However, in the present context, he stated “we can’t finalise now whether we can start the first dose of vaccination for 18 years and above on May 1.” In the meantime, he informed that the DIO will be going to Kohima to get more vaccines in the coming week.

Dr Kolhitso Khalo, District Immunization Officer (DIO), Phek informed that the response is slowly improving. “But we are yet to conduct in many villages”, he added, primarily because the state is doing it phase wise.

“Initially, we started from the district hospital, then Community Health Centres and after that, we went down to Primary Health Centres, and expanded to Health and Wellness Centres, and after that we will go to Sub-Centre levels (which is yet to be covered),” he informed.

Initially, he said there was hesitancy even among the healthcare workers, but now, seeing the situation that the second wave has created more people are turning up. “I am only worried about the vaccine supply from the government.

Otherwise, I hope people will turn up. We are expecting to get sufficient doses of vaccine,” he added.

He meanwhile expressed concern that some people are still hesitant due to false rumours on social media.

He urged the entire community to participate, especially the church and the civil society organizations in encouraging vaccination. “If the Medical, Administration and Police alone are to fight this, then vaccination coverage may not be that good especially in Nagaland and for the whole North East. When we compare to other states, performance of North East is comparatively very low. So everybody needs to support this campaign,” he maintained.

In Zuketsa PHC covering 5 villages, two sessions of administering COVID-19 vaccine has been conducted till date. In these two sessions, Dr Vetsolou Koza, Medical Officer, PHC Zuketsa highlighted that 46 healthcare workers were covered in the first session and 101 beneficiaries were administered the vaccine during the second session.

While sessions are not conducted every day, she said they collect names of beneficiaries and administer the doses bases on the number.
