The Medemer Fund which means ‘a friend helping out a friend’, is a crowd funded project dedicated to bringing about change and empower children from less privileged backgrounds with skills and knowledge by financially helping them for their education.
Started in 2019, Medemer Fund began as an individual effort by Anen Longchar.
“For a year, it was just me trying to help out the kids as I felt I could do it in whatever small ways. But then I met these amazing people, with whom I knew I had to share my story. You see, everyone can help anyone but to continue to do the work consistently requires determination, passion and dedication. I just knew that these friends were the perfect fit for the Medemer Fund family. So, at present we are a seven-member team,” Anen Longchar shared with The Morung Express.
The team consists of Anen Longchar (Founder), Sentinaro Jamir(HR Associate), Aren Tzudir (Coordinator), Temjenzenla Aier (Communications Associate), Bendangtoshi Longkumer (Accounts Associate), Moamen Imsong (Advertising and Media Associate) and Ben Longchar (Editor).
“Since 2019, Medemer Fund has organized different initiatives and donation drives. In the year 2020, before the pandemic, Medemer Fund organised a fundraising event in the streets of Kohima selling coffee and snacks prepared by the team members followed by a night of live music at Dcafe, Kohima to help raise funds for underprivileged children and we were overwhelmed by the people who came to support our young ones,” said the members of Medemer Fund.
“During the pandemic, Medemer Fund made face shields and distributed it to the frontline workers as a sign of gratitude for their sacrifices to keep us safe. The face shields were also given to teachers, students and municipal sanitary workers. We also planned an event called “A Christmas Handover”, where we gave out gifts with the help of so many generous donors, to kids from families who were hit hard and were struggling financially because of COVID-19,” they added.
The Medemer Fund has helped fund students from underprivileged backgrounds including three theology students who have already completed their BTh studies last year and one of them is now serving as Youth Pastor. The group also helped sponsor a student to complete his B.A and is now pursuing MA honours while also helping one student cover for her hostel fees in order to help her focus on her studies without having to travel to and from her house.
A statement from one of the donors reads, “Because of such initiatives, it made me realize and discover that there are people around us, even in our family and our closest neighbors who are silently suffering; it makes us open our eyes and our hearts to reach out to them and help those in need unconditionally. Unless such initiatives are organized, we would all be oblivious and busy in our daily routines without being aware of the daily struggles of even our closest friends or relatives.”
‘Walk for a cause’
When asked about their future plans and goals, the Medemer Fund said that the team is organizing a Walkathon on March 27 under the theme ‘Walk for a cause’ to help raise funds for underprivileged children. The team also informed that one of their core objectives is to focus on mental health at the crucial growing phase of children from adolescence through adulthood.
Sharing their message of hope, members of the Medemer Fund said, “There are many people who would tell you that there are lots of people taking up such initiatives and there is nothing unique in what you are doing. But that should not stop you from what you are doing because if each of us contribute in our little ways, then all our efforts will one day add up to creating a better society. With this simple vision, we should all continue pursuing our little dreams, each in our humble capacities and capabilities with the hope to one day make a big impact together for our society.”
They also shared that, for details of their works and for donations, one can visit their Instagram page @medemerfund.
