Predicted to reduce load-shedding in town west of rail track

Dimapur | March 20
The Department of Power, Nagaland (DoPN) is all set to commission a new power distribution sub-station in Dimapur.
The new 33/11kv sub-station located at Forest colony, with an installed capacity of 20 MVA, will be inaugurated on March 22 and will be monitored from SDO (E) 1, Dimapur Electrical Division.
According to DoPN officials in Dimapur, it will reduce the existing load on 33/11kv Metha sub-station, which has been reeling under acute demand pressure for years with its installed 20 MVA capacity stretched beyond limit. Metha has been catering to demand in Dimapur’s densely populated urban localities and key commercial zones west of the railway track. Some 272 distribution transformers, with a combined load capacity of around 48 MVA, are connected to Metha at present.
In other words, the actual demand is estimated to have crossed 20MW, whereas, Metha’s output is tipped to be only around 14-16 MW.
To avoid strain on the installed distribution system, it has been scheduling a load-shedding ritual throughout the day (one hour off-two hours on), to meet the demand of over 23,000 consumers, a sizeable portion of which are commercial.
But with the Commissioning of the Forest colony sub-station, the existing load will be reduced by almost half, implying reduced load shedding. Over 7,000 consumers would be migrated to the new sub-station, affecting a 40 percent load reduction on Metha.
Provided there is sufficient power allocation, “lesser load shedding means extended power supply, improved business transaction and (even) improved revenue collection,” commented a DoPN official.
It was informed that the new sub-station was constructed under the Central government’s Integrated Power Development Scheme and will be the 10th distribution sub-station under Dimapur Electrical Division. This Division has around 73,000 consumers at present.
